How to Notice When You’re Feeling Dysregulated

There are a bajillion tools out there to improve the body, the mind, the productivity…if you got a problem, someone has an idea of a solution for you. (Take it or leave it! Including this one!)

But how do you know *when* you need a solution? Are you aware of your problem?

Less people have awareness than we think. We are all ignoring a need that we have because we either don’t want to deal with it, don’t want to know about it, or don’t know that what we are feeling isn’t normal.

And if you’ve been seeing this new buzzword ‘dysregulated’ but aren’t sure if it applies to you, keep reading. Let’s talk about it.

What is Dysregulation?

The word dysregulation refers to the imbalance felt in the body and mind when there is stress or overwhelm. Too much noise, too much touching, too many to-dos, too much of anything can overwhelm your nervous system - the part of you that controls all the other parts of you.

When the nervous system detects there is too much going on, it can no longer regulate itself and the body back to homeostasis (the zen mode where you are all good and everything is working as it’s supposed to).

This dysregulation system is important because it clues the body and mind that SOMETHING IS HAPPENING and that it needs to drop everything and focus on the situation at hand.

The problem is, it’s happening so much that we are associating these alarms with false alarms and suppressing our awareness to the system.

Which is really not helpful when you have work to do and people to take care of and a body that needs some attention.

And you aren’t meant to live in a state of dysregulation. So when you do, you have more frustration, less patience, and don’t feel like yourself. We don’t like that for you.

How To Recognize When You’re Dysregulated

The 1st Step in finding the right dysregulation tool for you is to build awareness of when you become dysregulated.

Like I said, we have become masters at suppressing this system, so you may already associate your dysregulation with normal. You are not alone but there is work to do here.

Start with asking yourself “how do I feel right now?” often, especially after interactions with other people.

It might look like this:

Baby is squirming in your lap at the coffee shop while you’re trying to talk to a friend and you start huffing out of annoyance. Clock it.

How do I feel right now:

  • I’m feeling distracted from the conversation I’m having
  • annoyed that I can’t listen to my friend or remember what I was about to say
  • also my body doesn’t feel relaxed.

Resolving Dysregulation with Neuro Emotional Technique

Now that you’ve started noting your dysregulation and the situations that lead to it, you’re ready for the good news: you can do something about changing it with Neuro Emotional Technique.

Neuro Emotional Technique (NET) is a tool that disconnects our stressy, emotional feelings from our ability to function.

It allows your body to process the cause of your dysregulation so it stops bouncing around and causing chaos in your body.

NET is a body technique, so it’s different than traditional therapy. There’s not a lot of talking around the issue. We get in and get to the root quickly, then give your body the space to process it.

And your hand is metaphorically being held the whole time, so you know need to know why you feel the way you do or how to let it go before you come in for your session.

Your body has all the answers and your NET provider has all the framework to help you through it.

NET is a quick and efficient way of reducing stress and regulating the body. Some have described it as “10 years of therapy in 10 minutes.”

If this sounds like what you need, you can work with Dr. Becca in Cincinnati or find a provider near you.
